Construction Technology Trend Watch – Augmented & Virtual Reality

Posted in: News on May 13, 2016

ARHere at Wohlsen, we have been intently watching recent advances in the Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) market.  We’re thrilled to see how some of our bleeding-edge peers in the construction industry are using these technologies.  There is a lot of excitement about AR/VR considering the ability it affords us to put our clients “inside” of their building projects far in advance of groundbreaking.

We believe that many of the recent advances that we’ve seen are due in large part to the consumerization of AR/VR technologies.  While there has always been a gaming and consumer aspect to AR/VR, the cost of this tech is beginning to fall which means that consumers are getting involved and helping to drive down cost for businesses in the process.

What does lower cost AR/VR mean for construction?  For starters, it means more of the technology being put to use in both the office and on the jobsite.  Where cost may have been a reason to avoid using augmented reality to show a client choices in their design, tools like SmartReality from JBKnowledge are removing barriers and literally placing an interactive model in the palm of your hand.

There are also a number of augmented reality headsets which are just around the corner.  Microsoft’s HaloLens is one of the most exciting because of the software partnerships that Microsoft has been able to establish.   A great example of one such partnership is the work they’ve done with Trimble (check out this video for more).  Aside from Microsoft, Google has also been around the AR-block with Google Glass and now their extremely low cost Google Cardboard platform is poised to bring virtual reality to the masses.

Ultimately, Wohlsen is in the business of building buildings for our clients.  We are always looking for ways in which we can improve the building experience for our clients and both augmented and virtual reality show tremendous promise to help Wohlsen deliver an amazing experience.
